নদীর বাঁধ ভেঙে কেনিয়ার রিফট ভ্যালির এক শহরে অন্তত ৪২ জন মারা গেছেন। দেশটিতে অন্যান্য বছরের তুলনায় বেশি বৃষ্টিপাত ও বন্যার প্রকোপ দেখা দিয়েছে।
সোমবার (২৯ এপ্রিল) স্থানীয় গভর্নরের বরাত দিয়ে ফ্রান্স টোয়েন্টিফোর এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে।
নাকুরুর গভর্নর সুসান কিহিকা বলেন, ‘অন্তত ৪২ জন প্রাণ হারিয়েছেন। আরও অনেকে কাদায় আঁটকে আছেন। আমরা তাদেরকে উদ্ধারের চেষ্টা চালাচ্ছি।’
নাকুরু কাউন্টির মাই মাহিউর কাছে অবস্থিত এই বাঁধ ভেঙে পড়লে অসংখ্য বাড়ি ভেসে যায় এবং একটি সড়কের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়। উদ্ধারকর্মীরা ভাঙা পাথরের নিচে আটকে পড়া মানুষদের উদ্ধারের চেষ্টা চালাচ্ছেন।
সোমবারের নিহতদের সহ মার্চ-মে বর্ষা মৌসুমে মোট মৃতের সংখ্যা ১২০ ছাড়িয়েছে।
